English has been recognized as a means of communication in the globe. However, owing to the lack of realistic English practicing contexts, EFL (English as Foreign Language) students generally have few opportunities to communicate with people in English, including speaking as well as interpreting and identifying what they have heard. In this paper, a spherical video-based virtual reality (SVVR) environment is developed to situate students in authentic English oral contexts; moreover, a peer assessment strategy is employed for guiding the students to learn to evaluate peers’ oral presentation and make reflections. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, an experiment was conducted with a total of 69 students assigned to an experimental group and a control group. The students in the experimental group learned employing a peer assessment strategy in the SVVR environment, while those in the control group learned in the SVVR environment without peer assessment. It was found that the proposed approach significantly improved the performances of the students in terms of English oral presentation, learning motivation, critical thinking skills as well as reducing their English learning anxiety.
