The purpose of this study was to employ eye-tracking techniques to explore the relationships between undergraduates’ search anxiety and cognitive load in online search tasks. Forty-eight university students(32 males, 16 females) participated in an experiment of problem-solving task to predict occurrences of landslide hazards after a web search. Eye-tracking measures including total fixation duration, total reading time, average pupil diameter, and fixation rate along with scores of the information anxiety rating scale, a self-reported cognitive load, and task performance were collected for data analyses. Results indicated that eye-tracking indices were positively correlated with students’ anxiety toward online search tasks. Students’ search achievement scores were positively correlated with their pupil sizes on relevant webpages and were negatively correlated with fixation durations on irrelevant webpages. In addition, students’ prior knowledge and pupil size on reading relevant webpages can significantly predict students’ achievement scores of the task. That is, students who had higher prior knowledge and larger pupil sizes on reading relevant webpages tended to have higher search achievement. It is worth noting that pupil size could be served as an indicator of students’ mental efforts while searching and reading online information. Future studies are suggested to further explore the relationships between students’ pupil diameters and search performances so that we can understand more about the role of the pupil size played in the cognitive process of online search.
