Citation network in academic articles has been long to apply to trace the intellectual structure of a research community. We started this research by searching the service innovation articles from the database “Web of Science”. The purpose of this paper is, firstly, to explore the main development and trajectories of service innovation researches, and, secondly, to find out the diffusion of service innovations. Therefore, this paper uses main path analysis、g-index、s-curve、brokerage roles and network structure analysis to analyze the articles.

The findings in this research show that,at the beginning of the service innovation research field, manufacturing was considered to be more lucrative and service sector only played a subsidiary role at that time. A few years later, many studies focused on assimilation, demarcation and synthesis approaches, and tried to differentiate service innovations between technological and non-technological. Also, many studies supported the argument of technology-driven innovations in services. The trends in service innovation from 2008 through 2012 show significant variations in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS), applications in different service industries and achieving competitive advantages. The main diffusion direction for service innovation is from Europe, the Americas and then to Asia.
