The study aimed to explore the motivation of information sharing behaviors of middle to older aged adults in social networking sites and the effects of the information sharing behaviors on perceived social support and subjective well being. For the users having various personal backgrounds, the following were also investigated: the differences in the status of social network usage (e.g. daily time spending on the social networking sites and instant messenger, and number of friends on most used social media), the type of social media selected (e.g. social networking sites and instant messenger), information sharing behaviors, information sharing motivations, social supports, and subjective well-being.
The present study targeted users in middle to older age, and was performed by conducting data collection both via online and paper questionnaires. Even though a total of 458 questionnaires were collected, only 413 valid questionnaires were used for hypotheses testing. The results of the present study are summarized below:
1.Age, education level, and Internet experience influenced the status of social network usage (e.g. daily time spending on the social networking sites or on the instant messenger, and the number of friends on most used social media).
2.Gender, age, education level, and Internet experience have effects on the type of social meida selected (e.g. social networking sites and instant messenger).
3.Age, education level, and Internet experience significantly influenced information sharing behaviors.
4.Concerning information sharing behaviors and information sharing motivation, the scores of social utility of males were higher than that of females. Males had stronger information sharing motivation than females. Both the differences of the intrinsic value and the differences of the achievement value among various age groups were significant.
5.Regarding to the influences of information sharing behaviors on the two aspects of social supports, both the differences of emotional supports and information supports among various age groups were significant, and the two aspects of social supports of the users at the age of 66 or elder were higher in level than those of the users at younger age.
6.As to the effects of information sharing behaviors on subjective well being, females obtained satisfaction in interpersonal relationships more easily than males. As for the other sub-construct of subjective well being, life satisfaction, there was a significant difference found among various education levels, and the degree of life satisfaction of the users having an education level of middle school or lower was lower than that of the users having other education levels.
7.Three determines (motivation) of information sharing behaviors were found, and they are the expected feedback, intrinsic value, and social utility.
8.The subjective well being and its two sub-constructs, life satisfaction and interpersonal relationship, were positively affected by perceived social support. The perceived social support was also found to be the significant mediator between information sharing behaviors and subjective well being of the subjects.
Finally, based on the results of the present study, conclusion and discussion were made. Furthermore, suggestions were also included for education administrators and future studies.
