In recent years, companies sending designers to participate in foreign exhibitions has been an important stage of the R&D process. Through visiting exhibitions abroad, companies can learn the latest trend and information as reference to be applied to their product development. Therefore, how to visit exhibitions effectively in order to obtain needed information efficiently is indeed an issue worth further exploration.
The study adopts in-depth interviews, complemented by the method of customer journey map, to help inquire two experts and six designers with rich experience in exhibitions, looking into their information search behavior in exhibitions and the effects brought about.
The research findings indicate that designers’ information search behavior in foreign exhibitions can be divided into three stages: “motivation stage”, “decision-making stage”, and “effect stage”. The process is likely to be affected by “company factor”, “personal factor”, and “external factor”, so reducing these factors will increase the quality of information search. The “purpose” and “personnel selection” in the motivation stage will decide the result of subsequent information search behavior. The outcome of the study is as follows:
The “mode of designer information search behavior in foreign exhibition” represents the details of three stages of behavior in exhibition, including the following eight factors: “company need”, “personal need”, “action before exhibition”, “action during exhibition”, “action after exhibition”, “influential factor”, “effect on the company”, and “effect on the individual”.
There are fourteen “action guidelines" made according to the stages before, during and after exhibition, which is a timeline-based principle for action.
“Behavior indicators” consist of 65 indicators of “commonality” and 45 indicators of “uniqueness”, which reach a total of 110 concrete action plans to serve as reference.
The result of the study enables both designers and companies to understand the process of visiting exhibition and its effects in a comprehensive fashion, which facilitates people without experience to learn quickly from others’ experience, and for experienced people to advance further.
