In the face of societal shifts toward singledom, declining birth rates, and aging populations, pet cats have become emotional support for many, seen as family members. This trend has transformed the pet market from niche to scale economy, increasing demand for diverse pet products. However, the use of plastics in these products challenges recycling and causes ecological impact and potential pet health risks. Recently, consumer focus on sustainability has led the pet industry to prioritize brand, environmental, and social sustainability. Many brands now use recyclable or biodegradable materials in their products and employ sustainable closed-loop systems to promote resource reuse, reduce waste, minimize raw material and energy use, and lower carbon emissions.
The goal of this creation is to develop sustainable pet cat products using recycled materials. Initial research led to the selection of recycled-cellulose pulp from the Absorbent Hygiene Product (AHP) industry as the primary material. Case studies provided insights into the material's characteristics and application methods. Circular design strategies were then incorporated, reflecting case study findings and pet ownership insights. This approach yielded pet cat product concepts that aligned with circular design principles and provided unique experiences. The creation also introduced a resource recycling framework tailored to the product concepts, promoting resource efficiency and stakeholder engagement, advancing a circular economy within the pet product industry.
Experiments with recycled-cellulose pulp resulted in three sustainable pet cat product prototypes: "Fur-ward," an easily assembled, storable cat tunnel toy; "Scentery," a sensory-stimulating snuffle toy; and "ReGrowl," a low-material, easily cultivated, biodegradable catnip planting kit. Anticipated benefits were assessed for each innovation, highlighting the potential impact of circular materials in the pet product market.
