The social instant messenger (IM) applications enable users to communicate with the silent context and choose when to read or reply messages. This communicative media is communicative mode of non-coexistence. Since users will not realize the current context of interlocutor, they often may hold simultaneous conversations. Due to the limitation of the display size of mobile devices, only one particular dialogue page will be shown and users will need to switch pages repeatedly. Furthermore, it is not convenient to type words on the mobile devices and the efficiency can be reduced when to reply messages. The purpose of the research is to investigate interface usability of social instant messenger application via the study on the display layout and contact person switch mode. The primary research method is to use questionnaire and experiment to investigate user experience and plan relative testing items of leading experiment, according to previous investigation. Finally, experimental design with two independent variables including the contact person switch modes and display layouts were made upon the efforts of previous research. Evaluations of six user interface simulations were conducted via performance of tasks and relative questionnaires.
The actual user experiences were discovered from investigating user experiences by questionnaire and leading experiment. Though the social instant messenger applications bring convenience on social networking, the social network will be the same as real context and most social time will be spent on communicating with the members within clique and sympathy group. The experimental design was developed and pondered upon previous research results. The final conclusion had been proposed based on the evaluation of six user interface simulations. The user interface of social instant messenger application with instant contact person switch mode could enhance the performance of task operations and usability to help user feel more satisfactory. Hidden menu which is same as keyboard in dimension and location could also provide better usability and satisfaction.
