Abstract
The study was an attempt to investigate two questions. 1) Of the three anxieties, namely classroom management anxiety, teaching anxiety, and foreign language anxiety, what is their relationship in the private language sectors in Taiwan? 2) What is the relationship between the three anxieties and EFL teachers’ personalities in the private language sectors in Taiwan? For this purpose, 13 male and 137 female teachers who work in the private sectors in Taiwan were selected randomly and filled out two questionnaires. The instruments were the Foreign Language Teachers’ Anxiety inventory and the Big Five Personality Factor Inventory. The resulting data were analyzed by Pearson correlation coefficient. The result showed that there was a significant positive correlation between language anxiety and teaching anxiety
(r = .420, p < 0.01) and a significant positive correlation between classroom management anxiety and teaching anxiety (r = 0.373, p < 0.01). Neuroticism had a significant positive correlation with teaching anxiety, language anxiety, and classroom management anxiety. Openness had significant negative correlation with teaching anxiety. Conscientiousness had a significant negative correlation with language anxiety and teaching anxiety. Extraversion had a significant negative correlation with teaching anxiety and language anxiety. The findings of this study indicated that a teacher who had language anxiety would suffer from teaching anxiety and classroom management anxiety. Moreover, teacher’s personality traits can predict their anxiety.
