  • 英語已廣泛成為國際商業活動的共通語言。隨著各行各業使用英語需求逐漸增加,台灣近年來也有許多學者開始從事專業英語(English for Specific Purposes)相關研究。然而,在工程背景之職場英語需求的相關研究卻顯少被探討。本篇研究旨在探討研發工程師於各種工作場合當中實際使用的英語技巧及英語在工程背景之職場當中所扮演的角色。本研究整合質化及量化研究方法探討:(1)業界研發工程師實際英語使用之技巧,(2) 人口統計變數和英語使用技巧之間的關係,(3)良好英語技巧對工程師在職場上所帶來的優勢,以及(4) 研發工程師、電機系學生和英文老師對於工程背景之職場英語技巧使用之認知差異與電機系學生和英文老師對於大專英語課程需求之認知差異。本研究採用調查問卷、半結構式訪談和實地觀察進行三方資料分析研發工程師實際英語使用的需求。此外,本研究採用調查問卷和半結構式訪談比較電機系學生和英文老師對於大專英語課程需求及工程背景之職場英文之認知差異。研究結果顯示研發工程師在工作場合當中最常使閱讀技巧,其中包含閱讀產品規格書(M = 4.688)、閱讀外部郵件(M = 4.463)、以及閱讀書面報告(M= 4.375),卡方檢定結果顯示人口統計變數與研發工程師使用英語技巧之間有7項顯著差異; 人口統計變數與電機系學生英語能力自我評估之間有4項顯著差異;再者,結果也指出在跨國電腦企業當中英語技巧和工作競爭力有十分緊密的關係; 最後研究結果也顯示研發工程師、電機系學生和英文老師對於工程背景之職場英語技巧使用之認知有所差異,電機系學生和英文老師對於大專英語課程需求的認知也有所誤差。本研究結果提供業界研發工程師、僱主、電機系學生、和英文老師更精闢的工程職場英語需求分析,以做為未來ESP課程、職業培訓課程、學生職涯規劃、以及工程師職涯升遷等參考。


    The entrenched status of English adopted extensively as a lingua franca to conduct business transactions is widely accepted. With the increasing demand to employ English skills in various industries, the research on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has been attracting great attention over the past two decades in Taiwan. However, few studies have explored the English needs in the engineering workplace. This study aims to explore the genuine English skills used in different communicative events by R&D engineers and the roles of English in engineering contexts. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches are incorporated into this study to explore (1) the authentic English skills employed by in-service engineers, (2) the correlation between demographic variables and English skills, (3) the advantages of good English skills for R&D engineers in the workplace, (4) the perceptions of English skills in the workplace among R&D engineers, E&E students, and English instructors, and E&E students’ and English instructors’ perceptions of English needs for English courses. The instruments, survey questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and on-site observations were applied to triangulate the English needs for the R&D engineers; moreover, survey questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were adopted to compare the differences and similarities in the perceptions of English needs for English courses and the engineering workplace. The results firstly reveal that reading skills are the most frequently adopted in engineering communicative events, including reading product datasheets (M = 4.688), reading external correspondence (M = 4.463), and reading written reports (M = 4.375). Second, the results of Chi-square Tests indicated 7 significant differences in opinions between demographic variables and English skills among R&D engineers, and 4 significant differences in perceptions of self-assessment of English ability among E&E students. Third, the responses indicate that there were close relationships between English skills and job competitiveness at MNCs in the PC industry. Lastly, the perceptions of English skills for the engineering workplace have discrepancy among R&D engineers, E&E students, and English instructors, and the English needs for College English between E&E students and English instructors are different. The results of the present study provide the engineers, students, teachers, and employers a deeper understanding of the authentic English skills to design ESP courses, to devise on-the-job training courses, to make the career plan, and to have job promotions.
