使用手機的導航功能對一般人來說是一件極為方便且普通的事情。然而台灣多數使用智慧型手機的視障朋友,並沒有受惠於此科技的優點,外出導航甚至獨立行動仍存有諸多不便。我們透過情境訪查、隨身觀察、與專家訪談等質化研究方法,深入了解視障者行走的方式、使用智慧型手機的習慣、以及過往安排日程查詢交通資訊的經驗。根據我們的調查,視障者仰賴聽覺使用手機,但大部份的網站與App呈現資訊的方式,皆以視覺思考的邏輯為主,其資訊呈現非常不利於視障使用者。此外,視障者行走時需仰賴聽覺、觸覺、嗅覺等非視覺方式接收環境的細節資訊,藉此辨認所在位置與正確的行進方向,但是現有的導航服務中都沒有提供這些訊息。這些問題都導致視障者使用現有的導航服務時沒有好的用戶體驗。我們依據研究結果產出一款專為視障者設計的導航app,順應視障者使用VoiceOver操作手機的習慣,本研究歸納出友善視障者的介面,來呈現交通資訊。於導航過程中結合定向訓練的概念,藉由Beacon的微定位技術,沿途提供環境細節資訊,讓視障者的行路經驗變得更簡單、順暢。最後,希望我們能藉由本研究的產出,提升視障者對於生活環境的認知,協助他們重建獨立行動與生活的能力。
Using mobile apps to navigate our daily outings is very common for most of us. However, the visually impaired smartphone user does not benefit from this technology. A tremendous demand for independence & mobility remains unsolved.
Through the qualitative research methods like contextual inquiry, shadowing, and expert interview, we’d like to reveal how the visually impaired people walk, how they plan for trips, and how they use smartphone.
According to our preliminary study, visually impaired people use their smartphone by auditory sense. They are navigated by VoiceOver, an iOS screen reader that verbally describe every object and movement on the screen. However, most of the websites and apps usually display information in a visual thinking logic. The visually impaired users can encounter many difficulties of unfriendly information display and interaction design with those services. In addition, we found that when the visually impaired person walk on the streets, they incorporate all the available senses of touch, smell, and sound to perceive the environments. They would be able to locate themselves and decide which way to go according to those references. Unfortunately, none of the current navigation services provide the information. These factors lead to a frustrating navigation experience.
In this paper, we propose a mobile navigation app specially designed for the visually impaired smartphone user. Incorporating with VoiceOver usage pattern, we present a visually impaired user friendly interface for searching outing information. By leveraging the concept of O&M training, the app provides micro location info to the visually impaired users through Beacons along their journey to enhance the outing experience. Other than that, the app preserves the route details for users to review and share. Through our design and research, we hope to enhance visually impaired people’s cognition to their living environments, motivate them to explore the world on their own, and enable a greater sense of mobility & independence.
