In recent years, the trend of entrepreneurship has been flourishing in Taiwan. As many people believe that the wage level in Taiwan is low, more and more people have opted to strike out on their own to circumvent the problem of low wages. A survey conducted by 1111Boss.com (Taiwan) among job seekers below the age of 40 found that as many as 75% of youths had either started their own businesses or planned to do so. In addition to that, according to the report compiled by the Fiscal Information Agency of the Ministry of Finance (Taiwan) on the statistics of new and closed businesses in various industries in 2016, the highest number of new businesses was found in the IT sector. In an information age, almost all daily affairs, large or small, have to do with information. Hence, more and more people are venturing into IT-related businesses.
However, in order to survive in the fiercely competitive and fast changing IT industry, businesses need to be able to accurately pinpoint market opportunities, quickly develop products, and identify suitable business models for the company. This enables the business to deliver products to its customers and ensure its continued existence in the market. This research will apply theories on entrepreneurship, organizational agility, and business model enactment to analyze how IT start-ups can identify commercial opportunities in the market and utilize strategic agility as well as IT agility to develop products quickly. Finally, this research will use the business model enactment to examine how these companies can identify business models suitable for them. This research uses the SEO company, KPN (King Power Network) as a case study and breaks down the company’s product development process into three stages: SEO,multi-screen integration, and real-time marketing. This research aims to examine how KPN
identified market opportunities, coordinated its strategies with IT so products can be developed quickly, and finally chose the suitable business model for each product in each of these respective stages. Based on the analysis results of these three stages, a profitability model for IT start-ups can then be formulated, as well as an understanding of the factors that lead to success or failure in each product development stage. Finally, an “IT Start-Up Profitability Framework” can be deduced and organized as a basis of reference for entrepreneurs who are planning their own IT start-ups.
