  • Startups have been known for their high workload and long working hours which affect their employees’ work-life balance (WLB). Different WLB programs have been implemented to increase job performance of startup employees. WLB has become popular topic for younger generations to have the boundaries between work and life. Genders and families’ influences are found to have an impact on WLB. The aim of this study is to explore WLB values between gender and investigate the relationship between WLB and job performance in startups. Qualitative methods were used in this study. Interviews are used to collect data. This study observed that WLB value is different between men and women startup employees. Men prioritized work over their life, and essential element of WLB for women is personal development. Most respondents believe that flexible work arrangements influence WLB. Flexible working hours and flexible work locations are the most common WLB programs in startups. Workload influences WLB by affecting respondents emotional and physical health. This study also observed that work and family roles impact respondents’ WLB and both genders prioritized work over their families. This study found that work-family conflicts are rarely happened to respondents who live far from their families. Other programs startups offered include paid lunch or supper and team-building activities. Men and women have different point of view regarding WLB and job performance. Respondents believe WLB affects their job performance because WLB help them have rest time and recharge their motivation to perform next day. Respondents who disagree that WLB affect their job performance feel that work responsibility is more important than WLB.
