With the rise of the Maker Movement, 3D Printing and Crowdfunding, more and more creators take the trend to raise the first pot of gold for their own project through the crowdfunding platform, which makes the practice dreams to become reality. This thesis uses the case of a technology-based startup, Taiwan 3D Tech (T3D), to describes the path of commercialized the exclusive Digital Light Projection and Visible-Light-Curing Resin technology via the world-famous crowdfunding website – Kickstarter.
By the maturity of crowdfunding, it has become not only for raising funds of projects but also taken as marketing strategies. The founder of T3D, Jeng-Ywan Jeng, a professor from the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), led the T3D went through the difficulty and launched the project on the crowdfunding platform successfully. In the beginning, Professor Jeng built Research and Development team and Marketing team for the crowdfunding project by exploiting the resources inside the university. Secondly, T3D collaborated with crowdfunding consultants in order to perform the project perfectly. Though there were plenty of challenges along with the constantly changing external environment, T3D still solved the problems with proper solutions and reacted rapidly with a sense of agility. In the end, T3D funded US$160,093 and reached the goal within two hours on Kickstarter, moreover, they received feedback from the backers which might be the crucial opinions for them to develop the second version of their product.
The case is based on the Harvard Case Study research method to discuss the theoretical topics of the essence of rewards crowdfunding, resource planning and allocation, ambidexterity, and enactment. To understand how to launch a project on crowdfunding websites as a Go-To-Market strategy. Also, to understand how to maintain the operation of a startup by perceived the changing of the external environment.
