The aviation industry is booming with the rise of air travel, and the safety issue has become a primary consideration. Research over the past years has mainly examined flight safety factors such as management, human factors, and mechanical steadiness; however, few studies have investigated the discourse of safety demonstration videos before takeoff. The current research paid close attention to the linguistic and non-linguistic content of airline safety videos regarding their linguistic and aesthetic inclusions. Fifty videos (speech data 27,114 running words) collected from YouTube channels were grouped and analyzed in terms of “a multimodal corpus-based framework” according to three main perspectives (Machin, 2007): linguistic features, visual presentations and audio characteristics. Each clip lasts for around 5 minutes (approximately 4 hours in total). Criteria were strictly followed in the source selection process so as to control the overall quality and validity of the analysis. The study adopted both qualitative and quantitative methods, using Wordsmith 7.0 to analyze language use, frequency, collocation, clusters and non-linguistic features. The results suggest that humor is employed in flight attendants’ safety demonstrations, the safety features indicated by word frequency are seatbelt and emergency, and the inclusion of irrelevant components contribute to the content abundance of safety videos. The multimodal corpus-based analysis reveals that the semiotic components of the safety demonstration video are deliberately produced, including the additional artistic value that is considered to better attract passengers’ attention and further influence brand image.
