In contemporary literature, the concept of ambidexterity is well explored as the management of a parallel approach to exploration and exploitation. The practical integration of a strategy that creates sustainable competitive advantage is more controversial. As many countries seek to retreat from global trade in order to become more self-sufficient, capturing new markets through exploration and growing in existing markets through exploitation is becoming in-creasingly conflicting. This paper examines the balanced and combined approach of the di-mensions of ambidexterity and explores the resource constraints that limit a parallel growth strategy in the domestic and international markets. A study of 1946 Taiwanese firms is con-ducted to find the effect of domestic and export sales growth on firm performance and their moderating effect on each other. It is found that, in general, maximizing export growth is positively related and maximizing domestic growth is negatively related to firm performance for this sample. The significance of these effects, including the interaction, depends strongly on the measure of firm performance. Transforming the growth rates leads to a strong positive relationship for the interaction and ROE, implying a non-linear relationship when a balanced sales growth strategy is integrated.
