With the improvement of living standards and the advancement of medical technology, the birth rate and death rate in Taiwan have been declining year by year, and the proportion of the elderly has continued to increase. In order to keep the quality of lives and dignity of the elderly, the development of gerontechnology has become an opportunity for some industries, and the Internet and wireless communication technologies have indeed changed people's lives, including smart home. Smart homes enable the elderly to enjoy life in a healthy, safe, and comfortable way and provide families and healthcare service providers with more convenient and efficient care tools for the elderly. However, smart home belongs to products of emerging technology. How to make elderly willing to adopting smart home products will be the primary issue for product designers, family members, and healthcare service providers.
This study mainly focus on Taipei, urban area of Taiwan, and the respondents of this study all age 56 and above, and are mainly the seniors in Minsheng Community Center, and the senior studying in EMBA program of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology and National Taipei University. In addition, paper-based and online questionnaires were distributed, and a total of 222 questionnaires were collected. This study adopted senior technology acceptance model (Chen & Chan, 2014), and proposed a research model that includes age-related factors from STAM as antecedent conditions. We tested the relationships among gerontechnology self-efficacy, gerontechnology anxiety, cognitive ability, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intention with structural equation models (SEM).
The results of this study confirmed the relationships among gerontechnology self-efficacy, gerontechnology anxiety, cognitive abilities, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intentions. Finally, based on the findings, theoretical and managerial implications as well as suggestions for future research were provided.
