本研究主要目的為探究使用英文繪本教導台灣國小四年紀學童多元文化是否能提升學童對多元文化的學習興趣與認知之成效。師生與生生互動式之課堂討論為本研究主要採取之教學方式。此外,本研究亦探討學童對於以英文繪本學習多元文化活動的看法。本研究之英文課程屬於新北市某一國小的課外活動課程,故學生能夠依照個人意願自由參與。其中,十二位來自該國小不同班級的四年級學生自願加入本課堂活動。本教學實驗由研究者親自授課,學生每週上課次數兩次,每次50分鐘,整體教學活動為期共18週。本研究所採用的教材為三本英文繪本,繪本內容分別描述義大利文化、印度文化及美國文化,所使用的研究工具包含作為前測、後測及第二次後測使用的測驗單、課堂教學觀察記錄單、教師省思記錄單、問卷、以及訪談。所有參與本研究的學童於每一次不同的主題文化教學活動進行前都必須接受前測,且於該主題文化教學活動結束後接受後測,並於三個主題文化的教學活動結束後要求填寫問卷,並進行一對一訪談。研究結果顯示使用英文繪本教導多元文化能顯著提升學童的學習興趣及對多元文化的認識。學童對於以繪本學習多元文化的活動產生很大的興趣並表示願意進階學習不同文化。未來研究可朝向擴大研究對象範圍、增加更多教學時數、使用更多不同之多元文化作品、利用更多確實的相關網路資源以及可採納不同的教學方式作為未來多元文化之教學。最後,本研究期望為教育當局、英語教材設計及編輯者及英文教師,帶來一些啟示。本研究所得的結論如下,運用英文繪本教導多元文化是一種能夠提升學生理解,及學習興趣之有價值的教學活動,應在以英文為外語的國小學習環境中推廣。


The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using English picture books to teach multiculturalism on promoting EFL fourth graders’ learning interests, recognition and attitudes toward multicultural learning in Taiwan. Multicultural teaching with discussion-based instruction was used as a teaching method in this study. Furthermore, students’ perspectives toward multicultural teaching activities through English picture books were also examined. The English class focused on the school extracurricular activities and the students could join the class according to their wish. Twelve fourth-grade elementary school students from New Taipei City were willing to join the class. Based on the three targeted cultures, i.e., Italian culture, Indian culture and American culture, three English picture books were used as the teaching materials. The participants received the cultural instruction twice a week for one semester and it took 50 minutes each time. The instruments used in this study included worksheets used as the pretests, the posttests, and the second posttests, in-class observation sheets, reflection journals, a questionnaire and an interview guide. All of the twelve participants were required to take the pretests, and the posttests after the multicultural teaching activities of each targeted culture. After the tests were completed, all of the participants were required to fill out a questionnaire and interviewed individually by the teacher-researcher. The findings of the current study revealed that using English picture books to teach multiculturalism can significantly enhance students’ learning interests and promote recognition toward cultures. Moreover, students showed great interests in English multicultural literature teaching activities and expressed positive willingness for further and advanced multicultural learning. Furthermore, the suggestions of wider subject selection, longer period for the teaching activities, more various cultural topics used for future studies, more authentic on-line resources provided for multicultural teaching activities, and different teaching methods or activities implemented are all valuable to be taken into consideration in further research. Finally, the findings of this study provided implications for education authorities, EFL teaching material designers and editors, and English teachers. In conclusion, multicultural teaching with English picture books is a valuable activity to enhance students’ understanding and learning interests on multiculturalism and should be widely promoted in the elementary EFL classrooms.
