摘要
本研究欲探討意象,並把主題聚焦在灰階壁紙的花紋變化,透過研究者於市面上窗飾店型錄找尋樣本(崴勝、安利及敦品等台灣商家)並依照研究者自行分類壁紙風格,如木紋、金屬紋、動物花紋及水墨山水畫等各種風格中,挑選20~34張壁紙,根據所挑選之壁紙,以10種意象形容詞及34位受試者並設計四種問卷,分實驗一至實驗四來進行測驗。第一階段本實驗試圖找出受試者對10種意象形容詞的主觀意象,並依據回答利用類別判斷法(categorical judgement method)找出分數區間及利用主成分分析(principal component analysis),分析意象形容詞群集;實驗二則採用壁紙互相搭配形式,利用實驗一已知資訊為前測,實驗二為後測,進行相關性分析;實驗三則是從實驗二分析結果中選出最具代表性的三張壁紙作為延續再加上三十一張新的壁紙樣本,進行兩種不同群集的意象形容詞測驗;最後在實驗四中利用研究者手繪花紋供受試者測驗,並依照最後結果設計一套公式,去計算兩種意象形容詞分數,依此結果與實驗三進行相關性分析,最後得出結果及預測方程式。

Abstract
This research intends to explore the imagery elicited by the pattern of a wide variety of achromatic wallpapers. The test samples of wallpapers were selected from the products currently used in the market such as those manufactured by Weisheng, Amway and Dunpin. The selected wallpapers included various pattern styles including wood grain, metal grain, animal pattern and ink landscape painting. For each wallpaper sample, a number of image scales were used for the participants to evaluate their visual impression of patterns shown on the wallpapers. In Experiment 1, 10 image scales, including like/dislike, beautiful/ugly, comfortable/uncomfortable, relaxing/heavy, lively/dull,fashionable/unfashionable, simple/complex, splendid/plain, unique/common and warm/cool, were used in the visual assessment of the wallpaper images. The categorical judgement method was used to determine the scale values and the principal component analysis was used to analyze the image scales based on the scale values. Experiment 2 was aimed to investigate the relationship between visual impression of wallpaper pairs and the individual wallpapers in the pair. Experiment 3 used the 2 image scales, complexity and activity, based on results of Experiment 1 for evaluation of 34 wallpapers which were manipulated to share the same level of lightness for the entire wallpaper image. Finally, in Experiment 4, a number of hand-drawn patterns were used to develop a set of predictive models that were able to calculate the values of a wallpaper image for the two scales, complexity and activity. The findings of the research are believed to be useful for interior designers and helpful in development of studies on patterns of images.
