Interacting with Voice Conversational Agent (VCA) becomes a part of our daily life,
whether it is through personal voice assistants to manage our daily schedules or through voice smart speakers to control devices in smart homes, voice conversation agents are integrated into our life. The common VCA are mostly integrated into our lives as an assistant to assist users to finish doing something or help us to search for information. However, when designing a smart device with a VCA in the future, the role of the VCA will be more diverse and complex according to the different functions and purposes. Therefore, this study discusses the design and development of the roles of the VCAs.
To expand the imagination of VCAs, this study first uses science fiction movies as
research materials, organizes and analyzes various VCAs and related clips in the movies, and explores the possible performance of VCAs. Furthermore, we propose a design method — using the voice conversational agent speculative role matrix as an ancillary tool for designers in the process of designing the persona of the VCAs. This study applies VCAs’ speculative role to the design process of everyday objects and explores the scenarios and possibilities of VCAs’ speculative roles through the design workshop. Besides, this study sorted out six design directions for designing voice conversational agents.
The speculative role in this study refers to the image performance given when creating the character model of the voice conversational agent, which is presented by the overall behavior and personality of the voice conversational agent.
