The development of Vietnam economy has set strong foundation for the use of English as a major tool for cross-culture business communication, including legal field. This study aims at analyzing the needs of English used in legal field in Vietnam to contribute to the curriculum design of legal English. The study addresses several research questions, including the extent to which the four English language skills are used by Vietnamese legal practitioners, the perceived needs for English language skills among these practitioners, the problems they encounter when using English in their work, and the English skills they want to improve. To conduct the study, a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods was employed using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. A total of 55 participants, consisting of lawyers, legal assistants, and in-house counsel professionals in Vietnam, were recruited for the survey, from which six individuals were subsequently selected for the interview phase. The study's results first highlighted the significant importance of English in legal field jobs in Vietnam, especially reading and writing skills. Secondly, drafting/ reviewing contract, writing formal correspondent and translating legal documents are the three most frequent tasks done in the legal field. Thirdly, legal practitioners felt most difficult in speaking and listening skills in their work due to their anxiety and lack of opportunity to use the two skills. Finally, for the analysis of wants, participants all agreed that writing and reading should be paid more attention to in the legal English curriculum for better preparation for legal practitioners’ future and real life practice. This study can serve as a valuable reference source for both legal practitioners, legal training institutes and curriculum designers in Vietnam.
