We investigated the effect of special weather events on harvested rainwater quality. Total of 94 rainwater samples were collected from two rainwater harvesting systems (RWHSs) in a campus in northern Taiwan between February and July 2012. There were one dust storm and two typhoons in Taiwan during the experimental period. Harvested rainwater was analyzed, including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), turbidity, alkalinity, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), acute biotoxicity test, concentration of 13 metals (Al, Ca, K, Mg, Na, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cd, Cr, Pb and Ni) and concentration of 3 anions (Cl-, SO42- and NO3-). In addition, multiple-tube fermentation was included for detection of total coliforms (TC). During antecedent dry days, effects of dry deposition on rainwater were studied as well.

Results of harvested rainwater of dust storm showed that the value/concentration of pH, turbidity, EC, DOC, Ca, Cu, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Zn, Cl-, SO42- and NO3- were higher than normal rainwater. However, in the case of typhoon rainwater, only the concentration of Fe and Na in rainwater were higher than ordinary rainwater. There was no significant difference with normal rainwater in the results of other parameters. In the acute biotoxicity test, the lethal concentrations 50% (LC50) of the rainwater from the pilot-scale RWHS, the TR Building RWHS, dust storm and Saola typhoon were 91.61%, 95.64%, 84.44% and 100%, respectively. In the dry deposition experiment, there were 10~40% metal ions such as Cu, Ca, K, Mg, Mn, Na and Zn dissolved in the acidified water.
