The number of passengers travelling by air is increasing, pre-existing medical conditions, as well as large aircrafts can accommodate more passengers and fly longer routes, raise the probability of in-flight emergencies.
Cabin crews being “first responders”, passengers’ health assurance is also one of their main responsibilities. Therefore, cabin crews need to complete First Aid training yearly in order to be capable of properly handling the emergency situations. However, the literature on this issue is scarce.
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among affection of first aid, work hardiness and self-efficacy of first aid in Taiwanese cabin crews, in addition, to examine whether work hardiness mediates the relationship between affection and self-efficacy. To achieve this aim, questionnaires were administered to 525 cabin crews across 5 airlines in Taiwan.

Study results indicate that there is a positive significant relationship between affection and self-efficacy of first aid. More importantly, the mediating effect of work hardiness on the relationship between affection and self-efficacy of first aid is also established. Findings also lend support to the predictive effectiveness of work hardiness in the self-efficacy of first aid.

This study suggested that the cultivation of affection, which will help the cabin crew to improve their self-efficacy during First Aid, may be one of the important goals in training. In addition, ways to improve the recognition and commitment of cabin crew members to the work should also be an important thing to pay attention to.
