Past studies have shown how sedentary behavior through compulsive Internet use can cause academic decrement. Studies have attempted to intervene through sports, but with mixed results. This study tries to clarify the relationship among compulsive Internet use, sports, and academic decrement through reviewing prior literature which brings in an additional variable of interest in physical activity. Data were collected twice, in study A(N=339) and study B(N=335), with study A used to process CFA results and structural equation modelling, while study B was used to confirm the results of Study A’s structural equation modelling and to do latent class analysis.
Findings show a potential mediating variable through interest in physical activity, mainly interest in physical education, which has the potential to be the key factor in controlling the negative effects of compulsive Internet use. The potential of interest in physical activity is then further explored through latent class analysis of the data from past studies which used a survey that investigated the compulsive Internet use, academic decrement from compulsive Internet use, sports habit, and interest in physical activity of 335 university students. Results further point to the importance of interest in physical activity in helping with sedentary behavior through compulsive Internet use.
