This study aims to investigate the effects of readers theater on the English vocabulary learning of 30 first-year students from the Department of Applied Foreign Languages in vocational high school and their reflections on the integration of readers theater activities into English courses. The Dicken’s classic literary work "A Christmas Carol" was adopted as the teaching material for the curriculum design. This study was conducted in eight successive weeks with 50 minutes each week. An English vocabulary test was given before and after the experiment to examine participants’ acquisition of English vocabulary. Besides, to further understand their reflections of the intervention of readers theater, 30 students were surveyed by the questionnaire as well as five students and one teacher were interviewed.
The results show that students had positive perceptions on the integration of readers theater into the curriculum. Their vocabulary learning ability has improved significantly and English learning motivation has been effectively improved. Moreover, through the group activities in the readers theater courses, students gradually realized the importance of cooperation and were able to learn with peers. When it comes to curriculum development and implementation, the selection of textbooks and scripts should be both educational and interesting. Teacher demonstrations helped streamline the teaching activities, while videos helped students integrate into the characters more easily. Last, if time permits, it is recommended that more British and American classic novels can be combined and applied to English teaching courses in vocational high schools.
It is hoped that the findings and implications of this study can encourage more teachers in vocational high school to incorporate readers theater activities into their curriculum so that more students can experience the fun brought by the readers theater.
