To increase the driver reaction time during driving events is crucial to enhance vehicle driving safety. In this research an algorithm to estimate driver time delay on-line is developed based on driver’s vehicle following behavior. During a braking event, the driver time delay is estimated using the area method and assuming that human behavior is modeled by a linear system with single time delay. When the braking event is not explicit, the relevant signals are analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient. It is observed that the inter-vehicle range and the time headway yield high correlation with the forth-coming driver time delay when braking event occurs. Experimental recorded data verifies that the proposed method in estimating human driver time delay is reasonable.
