As sheet metal parts are widely adopted in the manufacturing of 3C products, how to achieve fast prototyping has become an important issue in sheet metal processing. The most complex process in sheet metal prototyping is the bending process, and the planning of its bending sequences directly impacts the feasibility of sheet metal prototyping. Therefore, this paper proposes a set of principles to be followed for the planning of bending sequences and selection of bending tools, and then applies them to the sheet metal prototyping process in order to shorten the time required for manufacturing and to reduce the cost.
To this end, we first selects a datum plane out of all the bending planes of the sheet metal, and then divides the sheet metal into various bending zones by using the angles formed between bending lines. Next, this study compares each bending zone with bending units to obtain the bending sequence for each bending zone. Lastly, the bending zones are sorted to obtain the final bending sequence. In order to select the bending tools, we combine the contours of each bending operation, choose appropriate bending punches from the bending-tool database, and then undertake an interference check with the bending contours.
This study not only proposes the principle of bending sequence planning for sheet metal, it also provides several examples to verify the accuracy and feasibility of the proposed principle. Compared to existing research literature, the key feature of this study is that the proposed research is applicable to sheet metal parts that have many bends, as well as complex bending directions.
