The sudden onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has profoundly affected global health security and socio-economic development. The concept of a healing environment (HE) has been proven to have a positive impact on environmental, physiological, and psychological health, with the medical field recognizing it as an effective means to reduce stress and enhance cognitive function. Even in the post-pandemic era, the uncertainty surrounding work environments continues to influence individual performance. Therefore, maintaining environmental quality and improving the employee experience have become crucial. However, despite the demonstrated benefits of HE in enhancing the performance of healthcare professionals, its application in general office environments remains limited. This study aims to establish HE design principles specifically tailored for general office environments and to explore user work performance and environmental preferences. Firstly, utilizing the fuzzy delphi method, we constructed office HE assessment criteria and their corresponding weights based on three design facets (natural/symbolic environments, built environments, and social environments). Subsequently, through an in-depth investigation using the individual work performance questionnaire, we assessed the performance of workers in two significantly different office environments. Finally, 60 university students participated in a test to understand their preferences for varying levels of healing in future work environments. The results demonstrate that office environments aligned with HE design principles exhibit superior performance, particularly in task performance and contextual performance. Differences in counterproductive work behavior were noted based on workers' educational levels. Additionally, university students showed a preference for environments with higher levels of HE in their job searches. These findings substantiate the notion that HE contributes not only to individual well-being but is also perceived as a valuable asset for socio-economic development, benefiting both workers and business organizations.
