Transaction cost theory/ economics (TCE) has been one of the most important economics and management theory for interpreting the formation and development of enterprises, even for describing multinational enterprises’ behaviors when processing internationalization. This study aims to depict how the theory evolves and make influence in international business studies (IB) studies by discussing how past papers applied the TCE in academic studies. The study also explore the critical factors that explain the importance of papers in knowledge networks of TCE applications in IB field.
The first part applies main path analysis to explore the main development of TCE applications in IB field. After searching the articles with related keywords from the database “Web of Science” and adding five books manually, we collect 1038 published paper in our dataset. Through analyzing, there are 23 papers on the main path. 15 of those papers are from UK and US, and 12 of them from a top business journal (JIBS). This implies the national factor and journal source may influence the importance of their roles in the knowledge network.
The second part tries to explain how papers play their importance in the field. We apply regression models to examine the roles of different characteristics in each paper (WOS citation, country, journal, published year and article type) on paper’s importance. The result shows the five factors (e.g. national factor, UK, theoretical-type paper, etc) are significantly influence the importance of papers in this field. The top business journals and early-published papers also make impacts significantly.
