When facing the challenges of limited nature resources, companies generally extend their business and supply chain globally to access cheap raw materials and human resources in different areas. In the classical linear economic transformation, natural resources turn to waste continuously through reckless production and consumption, then causes different level of environmental trouble in nature depletion and pollution. The concept of circular economy starts to get attention from scholars in different disciplines, e.g. environmental science, economics, and operating research to convert waste to value. To have a holist understanding in circular economy, this study aims to observe the multidisciplinary scientific studies, (1) explain the knowledge development; (2) identify the differences appears in different scientific fields and locations; then (3) explore critical factors in diffusion of knowledge.
In order to distinguish from different research field in circular economy, this paper totally collects 4,121 relevant article and review papers from WoS database, and understands region basic situation from OECD database. By key-route main path analysis, we identify the main topics in different periods, show the contribution of certain research in scientific fields and regions and figure out several key research factors to advance scholar studies.
The main path results show that the concept of circular economy is based on industry ecology and industrial symbiosis, mainly showing one using another department’s waste as material to decrease operating costs and offer mutual benefit. In recent decade, researchers explain that circular economy not only operates as the solution to create financial advantage and solve local environmental issue, but drives circular innovation and improves society. Scientists, from technological view, devoted on benefit both environment and economics by designing material system, whereas the scholars in social science considered circular economy as the opportunity for innovation investment and profit making.
Besides the domains of industry ecology and industrial symbiosis, the research areas, environmental sciences & ecology also reveals influence to conclude diverse technology and studies methods for solving environment issues and point out new circular view. Operations research and management science is one of main research areas in circular economy, which not only aims to maximize the profit, but consider policy and environment impact to improve the resource planning and decision making models recently.
Some of regions focus on the issues in engineering and material science, and some pursue the balance development in technical engineering, industrial management, and policy. In particular, the scholars in Europe tend to find out the solution from circular economy on the basis of environmental and society demand.
Although dominant industrial power may provide scholars with richer research materials and resources the expansion of circular economy research still depends on methods and insights which actually improve regional resource efficiency. As the concept in Europe integrating both science and social science knowledge to frame circular ability and business model, the development also brings implications for policy makers to learn for future.
