This study aimed to explore post-secondary school students' new media literacy and information searching strategies, and the relationships between these two factors. The samples were 1514 undergraduate students and graduate students, (670 males and 844 females) divided into three groups (767 junior undergraduate students, and 555 senior undergraduate students, and 192 graduate students) from 56 universities in Taiwan. Two questionnaires were used in this study: The New Media Literacy scale (NMLS) and Information Searching Strategies scale (ISSS). The quantitative results were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis, descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, correlation analysis, and path analysis.
The result of exploratory factor analysis showed that the two scales have good validity and reliability. About new media literacy, post-secondary school students’ functional consuming skills are at a high level, and critical prosuming skills are at a low level. students had a high level and good skill to get media information and to understand the content of media. But they had low skills of distinct logic and rigorous thinking in the media environment and apply the media effectively to communicate with society. Students' highest level items are consuming skill and prosuming skill. female students' consuming skills, prosuming skills, and production 2.0 are better than male students. male students had a better understanding, evaluation ability, analysis ability, and feedback ability than female students. Senior undergraduate students are more able to evaluate, criticize, and challenge media content than junior undergraduate students. Graduate students and senior undergraduate students have better synthesis ability to sample and mix media content than junior undergraduate students.
The results show post-secondary school students’ all of the new media literacy factors and exploration are significantly positively correlated. The path analysis results show that post-secondary school students' "understanding," "evaluation," "analysis," and "synthesis" in NMLS may predict their "elaboration" in ISSS, and "distribution" in NMLS may predict their "match" in ISSS.
