台灣老花磚的文化是時代留下來給我們的寶貴文化遺產，百年前的花磚價格甚至高於地價，這些花磚每一片都有屬於自己的故事，每一片的繁華都是舊時代的共同印記。直至經歷二戰時期，現今花磚師傅與傳統技藝已全數銷聲匿跡，而花磚的歷史在台灣建築史中僅存在了短短20年，現代人已無法再與花磚產生情感共鳴，老屋子牆上留下的美麗花磚也將慢慢地隨著時間，永遠消失在台灣歷史上。

本研究以台灣花磚博物館為主體，探討老花磚復育的發展過程。創辦人徐嘉彬先生是台灣花磚的守護者，自大學時期追求太太的過程中啟發對花磚的熱情，從此開始拍照紀錄、搶救殘破瓦片、修復花磚，時間長達近20年。直到2015年因緣接手嘉義最後一間檜木木材行，才決定放手一搏籌備花磚博物館，將多年來收藏的花磚展出，目前台灣花磚博物館共收藏4千多片花磚。隔年2016年法國大學為台灣花磚文化申請「世界非物質遺產」，凸顯台灣花磚的重要性。2017年，徐嘉彬先生更透過募資平台在短短2個多月間募得500多萬元，並將募得的資金全數投入在復育花磚的技術中，經由不斷反覆地技術測試、學術研究、開模窯燒，讓失傳已久的技法成功再現，製造出第一片Made in Taiwan的花磚。徐嘉彬先生希望有朝一日能讓台灣花磚重回建材市場，創造具有傳統美學的新建築文化。

The culture of Taiwan's old tiles is a precious cultural heritage left for us from the past. The price of tiles a hundred years ago was even higher than the prices of land. Each kind of these tiles has their own story. The prosperity of each piece is a common mark of the old era. Until the time of World War II, tile masters and traditional craftsmanship have all disappeared, and the history of tile existed only for 20 years in the history of Taiwanese architecture. Modern people can no longer have emotional resonance about the tiles, as the tiles left on the walls of old houses slowly are disappearing with time and gradually disappearing from the history of Taiwan.

This study takes the Taiwan Tile Museum as the main institution to investigate the process of old tiles restoration. The founder, Mr. Xu Jiabin, is the guardian of Taiwan tiles. He was inspired by his wife’s passion for tiles during his college days. From then, he began to take pictures and records, rescue broken tiles, and restore them. This lasted for nearly 20 years. As in 2015 Chiayi town took over the last row of Taiwanese Cypress wood, only in this year it was decided to start preparation of the Tile Museum to display all the collection of tiles gathered for many years. At present, the Taiwan Tile Museum has collection of more than 4,000 tiles. The year after in 2016, French University applied for the “UNESCO” for Taiwan’s tiles, highlighting the importance of tile culture in Taiwan.

In 2017, Mr. Xu Jiabin raised more than 5 million NTD just in 2 months with the help of a fundraising platform and invested all the funds raised in the technology of restoration of the tiles, repeating technical tests and academic research. The special kiln was designed and the old technique was successfully reproduced to create the first made in Taiwan tile. Mr. Xu Jiabin hopes that one day he will be able to return Taiwanese tiles to the building materials market and create a new architectural culture with traditional ornaments.
