The development of modern Surabaya has created two contrasting physical urban layers within the city. One layer shows an image of Surabaya as a modern city and the other shows Surabaya city that formed from kampung settlements that are densely populated and very organic. The objective of this research as a preliminary study of kampungs in Surabaya was to explore the public space of urban kampungs in Surabaya, Indonesia based upon the interplays of physical environment, user behavior and activities. By specifically chose three kampungs in Surabaya which are two local kampungs and one Chinese kampung. Then direct observations were conducted at all three kampungs to find out the environment condition inside each kampung. Mapped all public spaces found in each kampung also necessary. That later, one sample of public spaces in each kampung was chosen for deeper observation with analyzed the physical environment, also behavior and activity mapping. It is shown that these three kampungs in Surabaya have different culture, characteristics, and environment. Therefore, the public space inside kampung also varied and there are public spaces that created because of an adaptation of the dense environment in a kampung. Which also affected how inhabitants of each kampung occupied and used the public space.
