現今的農業社會,面臨氣候變遷、農業缺工、人口老化、全球貿易競爭、動物疫情爆發、區域衝突…等種種因素,導致糧食危機,糧食安全變成各國間重要的課題,因此能幫助提高生產效率與降低生產成本的智慧農業就顯得相對重要,各國紛紛開始投入推廣智慧農業。
本個案描述農識國際股份有限公司創辦人暨總經理 陳炤堅(下面統稱:馬克博士)自民國95年接觸到農業後,被農業的迷人之處深深吸引,至今已投入此產業十多年的時間,累積了大量的農業產學人脈與知識,以及農業專業系統開發的豐富經驗,馬克博士內心一直覺得台灣沒有廠商專門針對農業做資訊化整合很可惜,但也因此察覺到背後龐大的商機,找到了自己可以大顯身手之處,所以於民國102年創立了台灣第一家做農業資訊整合的公司-農識國際。公司成立不久後,農識國際迎來了一個重大的轉變,民國104年國內禽流感相當嚴重,政府推廣室內禽舍,因此民國105年農企元進莊與馬克博士合作,從丹麥引進全台第一座智慧禽舍,但因國情不同無法完全套用,所以馬克博士與學術單位合作,找來許多家廠商協同打造出適合台灣環境的智慧禽舍,而且價格只需要丹麥系統的1/4,後續又透過自身農業的專業知識與產官學良好的人脈關係,發展出更多元的智慧農業解決方案,有創新農業、科技農業與樂活農業不同領域的解決方案來協助農民做數位轉型,藉此提高農民的收益與市場競爭力,並期許藉由科技賦能於農業,讓台灣成為國際農業的典範,讓農業成為台灣產業的標竿。
本研究以哈佛個案研究的方式進行,此個案內容可用於討論商業模式、資源基礎理論、資源拼湊與社會網路理論。了解個案農識國際如何運用智慧農業共好的商業模式賺錢; 如何透過資源基礎理論來分析其在智慧農業市場上的競爭力;如何透過資源拼湊,盤點現有的資源來補足既有的不足,朝正確的方向發展;最後,從社會網路的節點中找到不同群體的結構洞,透過弱連結創造出新的服務模式,打造智慧農業完整方案。


In today's agricultural society, a myriad of challenges including climate change, labor shortage, aging population, global trade competition, pandemic outbreaks, regional conflicts, etc., are leading to a food crisis. Ensuring food security has become a crucial issue among countries, rendering smart agriculture, which can help enhance production efficiency and reduce production costs, increasingly important. This case study explores the journey of Dr. Mark Chen, the founder, and CEO of Agritech International, who has devoted over a decade to the agricultural industry after being captivated by agriculture's charm since 2006.

Having accumulated extensive knowledge and a rich network in academia and industry, Dr. Mark Chen identified a significant business opportunity in the lack of information integration specifically for agriculture in Taiwan. As a result, he founded Agritech International in 2013, the first company in Taiwan focusing on agricultural information integration. Shortly after the company's establishment, it faced a major shift when the avian flu outbreak in 2015 led the government to promote indoor poultry houses.

In collaboration with Yuan Jin Zhuang and academic institutions, Dr. Mark Chen introduced the first smart poultry house in Taiwan from Denmark in 2016. However, due to different national conditions, the Danish model could not be fully applied. Hence, Dr. Chen cooperated with several manufacturers to tailor a smart poultry house suitable for the Taiwanese environment, costing only a quarter of the Danish system.

Leveraging his specialized knowledge in agriculture and strong relationships in academia, industry, and government, Dr. Chen later developed more diverse smart agricultural solutions. These included innovative, technology-based, and lifestyle-oriented agricultural solutions to aid farmers' digital transformation. This not only improved farmers' income and market competitiveness but also aimed to make Taiwan a benchmark in international agriculture through technology empowerment, with agriculture serving as a flagship industry in Taiwan.

This case study adopts the Harvard case study method, focusing on the business model, resource-based view, resource orchestration, and social network theory. The case can be used to discuss how Agritech International leverages a mutually beneficial business model in smart agriculture to generate profit, how the resource-based theory can analyze their competitiveness in the smart agriculture market, how resource orchestration can inventory existing resources to make up for deficiencies and develop in the right direction, and finally, how structural holes can be identified in the nodes of the social network. By leveraging weak ties, new service models can be created to offer comprehensive smart agriculture solutions.
