The transition towards sustainable consumption practices has fostered the emergence of zero-waste grocery retails (ZWGR) as a promising solution to mitigate packaging and food waste. However, there remains a research gap regarding the factors influencing product selection in these stores across different countries. This study aims to bridge that gap by investigating the determinants of product selection in ZWGR through a comprehensive methodology. The study examines personal, cultural, social, economic, and psychological factors, as well as the impact of country regulations, technology advancement, and the store objective. Expert interviews, literature review, and a survey conducted in 14 countries contribute to the findings, revealing that ZWGR in developed countries prioritize fresh produce, organic food and a wider variety of meat alternatives. The findings provide valuable insights into the factors shaping owner decisions on product selection in ZWGR, contributing to a better understanding of sustainable consumption practices and waste reduction.
