ABSTRACT
This study highlights and examines the influence of research and development (R&D) investment in emerging technology on firm performance. Drawing upon the literature on technological innovation, this study argues that R&D investment positively impacts the adoption of emerging technology. In addition, adopting emerging technology can positively affect a firm's short-term and long-term performance. Using the data from companies listed in the sector of information technology of The Standard and Poor 500 (S&P 500) from 2006 to 2020, this study finds that R&D investment has a positive impact on the adoption of emerging technology (Artificial Intelligence - AI) while the adoption of emerging technology can improve the short-term performance (sales growth rate) and long-term performance (Tobin’s Q) of the firm.
Keywords: Research and Development, Firm Performance, Emerging Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Innovation.
