Inspired by Peter Newmark’s discourses about translation, especially his ideas about text types and four levels of translation, the researcher sets out to explore and analyze the ways the linguistic elements, characters, and cultural elements are translated in the two chosen Chinese translations of J. D. Salinger’s classic novel The Catcher in the Rye, one translated by Shi Xianrong (施咸榮) and Qi Yiwei (祈怡瑋) in 2007 and the other by Cheng Weian (成維安) in 2002.
Structurally speaking, this thesis consists of five chapters, each of which has its own focus and connects with one another to form a research project. Chapter One offers an overview of the whole research project. Starting from personal experiences of reading, the researcher hopes to offer in this research project an objective observation and analysis of the possible difficulties and potentialities of improvement in translating a literary text like Catcher. Chapter Two introduces the background of Salinger and his writings, focusing on the important linguistic, textual, and cultural characteristics of the novel that are important references to evaluate its Chinese translations. Chapter Three explicates the critical approach of this study that is inspired mainly by translation theories of Peter Newmark. In light of the English scholar’s ideas on translation, this study aims to establish persuasive criteria for evaluating translations of novels. Among these Chinese versions of the novel, the researcher chooses two representative translations and critically compares them according to the theoretical criteria in Chapter Four. Chapter Five concludes with the solutions to some critical issues, problems, and discrepancies in hopes of the establishment of a new and pedagogically-sound English-to-Chinese translation review module. This will, ideally, lead to the creation of a credible system for evaluating English-to-Chinese translations.
