In recent years, there has been an increased focus on research related to the circadian rhythm. Jeffrey Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael Young, three geneticists, were awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for their past discoveries of the molecular mechanisms that control the circadian rhythm. In addition to the increasing importance of circadian rhythms, many studies indicate that lighting has a significant impact on modern humans' physiological and psychological aspects. Therefore, the "Circadian Lighting" that combines the two has become an important research topic for office workers. In the field of office lighting, although there are standards to regulate the illumination levels in different workplaces, there is still room for further discussion on the effects of office lighting on human health.
In this study, we simulated the general office field and working mode as the experimental framework, conducted the reconstruction of office light source based on Circadian Stimulus (CS), and then analyzed the light source details with Melanopic Daylight Efficiency Ratio (DER) of CIE S 026 Toolbox. The physiological signal data such as electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), electrooculogram (EOG), and Critical Flicker Fusion Frequency (CFF), and the results of subjective visual comfort questionnaire were used to investigate the physiological and psychological changes of 32 office workers (16 males and 16 females, mean age 28.00 ± 5.79 years) when they performed three office tasks.
This study successfully verified the feasibility of Circadian Stimulus for office lighting design. The results analyzed the lighting with high CS and high Melanopic DER and found that the lighting with CS ≥ 0.45 and high Melanopic DER can effectively help office workers reduce visual fatigue. Therefore, this study proposes a lighting design method to reduce the visual fatigue of office workers based on the results of this analysis.
