從2017年開始各品牌智慧型手機陸續將玻璃材料應用於機殼上，而且比重有越來越多的趨勢。因為外型機殼設計為智慧型手機品牌研發的重點，可藉此來建立不同產品線與品牌的形象，吸引消費者並且購買的意願。而玻璃具有輕薄、透明、堅硬、易擦拭、耐刮傷、耐候性佳等特點，可製造出曲面外觀機殼。另外在玻璃表面作加工處理或印刷，能賦予智慧型手機產品有設計新穎性與特殊質感的特色，達到整體簡潔、透明感的設計效果，讓外型更圓滑更輕薄，藉以突顯產品外觀和設計差異化。
