  • The success of technology transfer (TT) allows the research institution to earn commercialized benefits, reputations, and intellectual property rights. TT studies thus have been developed for decades. As TT is related to research institutions, laboratories, universities, industry, and government, scholars from different backgrounds conduct research from different perspectives and with different methodologies. Therefore, this study focuses on the evolution of TT and explores the existing sub-topics from which we will learn the relevant theories and critical issues for facilitating TT. Additionally, this study also explores the scholar’s network in order to have various perspectives on what characteristics could help the scholar have contributions to the research.
To explore the knowledge flow of TT, this study collects a total of 1,520 papers from the Web of Science (WOS) database. It covers the year 1986 to 2023 collected for analysis.
The citation data focuses on SSCI which is a social sciences citation index from scientific and technical journals around the world. We apply main path analysis (MPA), a citationbased method, to study the knowledge diffusion path and the developmental trajectory.
Moreover, edge-betweenness clustering is used for further analysis in order to identify the existing sub-topics in the field. On the other hand, the statistical method, regression analysis, is applied to examine the influence of a scholar’s contribution.
This study has three main findings. One is about the 3-stage development of the knowledge path in the TT field. The research focuses on the path from investigating TT partnerships, emphasizing the determinants and mechanisms of TT, and then till the recent issue in strengthening factors influencing TT success and impact. The whole path shows that TT studies started from macro policy concerns to wider system growth. The other finding shows that some emerging themes are discovered, such as clean development mechanism (CDM) on TT. These emerging themes lead us to know more about the future development of TT. The last finding shows the characteristics that have an impact on the contribution of the researcher such as collaboration and a particular research field.
