此個案是探討2010年7月惠普收購Palm的併購案。個案中分析研究了兩家公司的歷史背景、二間公司當時商業處境、當時手機市場概況、惠普的併購動機以及惠普在併購後遭遇的各種變化及危機。
This case is about the technology giant HP’s acquisition of Palm Inc in July 2010, and the series of business challenges HP experienced at the same time. It describes business difficulties faced in the booming smartphone industry and overall mobility industry environment from the background of two companies, which also examines in retrospect what motivated HP in this merger and the attempt at establishing itself among the market leaders.
Furthermore, the study would trace Palm's footsteps in the mobile devices, platform competition and the circumstances which led to its take-over, followed by two companies’ merger, post-merger activities and the rapid changes in HP’s business strategy. Those strategic missteps truly ended the HP and Palm’s collaboration and brought numbers of challenges punching HP. In the end, HP failed to sustain its acumen and fell back in the race for market share in the growing smartphone segment of the mobile devices industry.
