When making a decision, consumers find many difficulties and obstacles that make them defer choice. Extant research in decision-making literature has discussed the causes and conditions when consumers prefer the no-choice option. Building on constructive view of preference, this research is contributed by defining the ideal point availability of consumers, which most of the time is not specified. The current research examines the moderating effect of ideal point availability in attractiveness difference choice set on choice deferral. Consistent with prior research, when consumers don’t have an ideal point, the tendency to defer choice is higher in a small than large difference in attractiveness choice set. However, when consumers have an ideal point, the attractiveness difference in a choice set has no impact on choice deferral. With two different studies, I examine the moderating effect of ideal point availability.
