Location management is an important issue in personal communication service (PCS) networks. In next generation mobile communication networks based on PCS, how to efficiently manage locations and reduce costs under overlaid systems with different bandwidth constraints is a challenging issue since multiple overlaid wireless networks can offer simultaneous access to users. In this thesis, we propose a distance-based location update scheme with a location cache (DB-LC) which can reduce the number of location updates in the bandwidth-limited system by making a little location updates to the location cache (LC) when users are accessing the bandwidth-unlimited system. Additionally, the DB-LC scheme can efficiently improve the paging delay and the cost using the sequential paging. For the DB-LC scheme, analytical performance measures under different mobility patterns and network topologies are provided. Finally, both analytical and simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperforms other location management schemes designed for overlaid networks in the literature.
