This study applied a mixed approach to investigate English-as-second-language (ESL)users’ information search behavior when they search for information online in English.Five Taiwanese and five Indonesian students were recruited to perform two types of life-like information search tasks, fact-finding and exploratory. Actions on screen and utterance from retrospective think-aloud protocols were recorded. None of the participants are English native speakers but have demonstrated adequate language proficiency to perform searches in English by providing official test scores. For observational data, experiment processes were screen recorded and divided into separate action units in order to map Holscher and Strube’s information search model and compare to their original results. Qualitative data were collocated and transcribed from retrospective think-aloud
protocols and post-interviews with open-ended questions. Transcripts were coded and analyzed based on grounded theory. From both observational and qualitative results, language effects on ESL users’ information search behavior were identified. In observational result, participants access to known websites by orienteering instead of teleporting due to the need of lessening cognitive effort. Additionally, the results yielded from qualitative approach further confirmed that language dose play an important role in ESL Web users’ information search process.
