Random access channel (RACH)-based small data transmission is one of the solutions proposed by 3GPP for the machine devices to transmit small packets without the establishment of a signalling connection with the core network. . The performance of the RACH-based small data transmission is highly dependent on the preamble allocation of the RACH. In this paper, we consider a cellular network which adopts RACH-based small data transmission to support multiple access-class machine devices. The preambles of the RACH is dedicatedly assigned to each access-class or partially shared by all access-classes. We present an analytical model to estimate the access success probability and the mean access delay of the devices for each access-class and identify the best preamble allocation method according to the given offered loads and traffic patterns.
