In this thesis, a study is presented of three types of directly modulated fiber ring laser by using Fabry–Pérot laser diode (FP-LD), reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA), erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and optical tunable filter (OTF). Firstly, A short-distance transmission is demonstrated using RSOA on ring laser. The tunable range of laser wavelength is 1535nm~1580nm. The output power is above 0dBm. The ER is 9dB, and the Q value is 10 for a directly modulation 1.25Gb/s NRZ signal.
Next, the direct modulated fiber ring laser is applied to injection-locked FP-LD for a bidirectional transmission. The laser not only generates downstream data but also serves as the injection light source for upstream FP-LD. The tunable range of injected-locked laser wavelength is 1538nm~1550nm, and SMSR is about 39dB. For 1.25Gb/s downstream and upstream transmissions over 25-km single mode fiber, power penalties is below 1dB, the bidirectional transmission sensitivities are of -29.84dBm and -27.80dBm for upstream and downstream transmission, respectively. After transmissions over 25-km single mode fiber, the ERs are about 9 dB, and the Q values are 8.9 and 7.3 for upstream and downstream transmission, respectively.
