Along with the advent of information age, convenience and promptness of Internet usage are getting more important. Very often, users are required to search for the information they really need after browsing various websites. Users usually need to spend time learning to interact with the websites so that they can understand various types of interaction modes. Inconvenience results from the interaction modes of many websites may affect the user's emotions and feelings indirectly. This study is intended to investigate the interface usability of the E-Map. It is hoped that the user interface design of current E-Map can be improved and the users’ satisfaction can be enhanced. The experiment in this study includes two stages:
(1) The pilot test: The purpose is to investigate the current E-Map user interface. An experiment was conducted to help understand potential interaction problems of the current E-maps. Based on user’s task performance, QUIS questionnaire, SUS questionnaire, and interview, we can understand users’ requirements and interaction problems.
(2) The validate experiment: Based on the results generated from the first stage together with summaries from relevant literature, validate experiment was conducted.
The experiment was planned based on a 2(levels of user experience)by 3(information representation styles)two-way ANOVA design. There are two levels in the independent variable of user experience:(a)High user experience: The user who uses E-Map more than 3 years.(b)Low user experience: The user who uses E-Map less than 3 months. There are three levels in the independent variable of information representation styles:(a)Information is represented as a whole: All the information was represented within the same page like most of the web page design style.(b)Information is partially represented: the often used functions are shown and other functions were hidden in the bookmarks.(c)Only frequently used information is represented: The information which is frequently used was represented in the user interface. The function and information was combined into the same button. Other functions were hidden in the bookmarks.
The generated results indicated that:(1)One of the major problems in the E-Map is the problem of information overload. (2)The “address search” and “route planning” functions are represented in separate functions can help acquire best task performance.(3)The style of “only frequently used information is represented” is suitably used for web searching purpose.(4)The style of “information is partially represented” is suitably used for web browsing purpose.(5)Bookmarks can increase interface usability and user satisfaction;(6)“User experience level” did not cause significant effects in interface usability and user satisfaction among the three menu styles.
