In recent years, “sustainability” has become an important goal for corporates. They no longer just seek for profit growth, but also take economic, environmental, and social issues into account. Sustainability is also highly discussed in academia. In the past 15 years, a large amount of research has been done to explore how can corporates do to reform and innovate in products, supply chains, and organizational structures, as to achieve their sustainable development goals.
To observe the development of sustainability research on corporate perspective, we collect 3101 literatures published from 1990 to 2022 through Web of Science, and identify the knowledge trajectory of corporate sustainability by main path analysis, then explore how research topics change overtime, and track the strategic trend of corporate sustainability development. We also find the most popular topics in corporate sustainability studies through edge-betweenness clustering. Further, we analyze green patents through an industrial case, in order to gain deeper understanding in how corporates formulate their sustainable strategy actually, and how corporates gain competence through the execution of sustainable strategy.
The results show that the concept of corporate sustainability started with the idea of embedding "eco-sustainability" into corporate management in the 1990s, then the concept of "green" emerged and start playing a pivotal role in corporate sustainability. However, when analyzing the sub-topics presented in the clustering result, instead of literatures related with green concept, the largest cluster shows up with literatures focusing on the corporate level of "corporate sustainability". Based on the findings, we propose an integrated framework of corporate sustainability, and provide insight in green patent strategy.
