  • An acoustic measurement was conducted in Holy Family Catholic Church in Taipei,
Taiwan. The measurement is intended to document the current acoustics condition and to
propose recommendations for the building improvement. Architectural features of the church
were also documented as this building is one of important churches in Taiwanese architecture
history. The acoustic measurement was performed using sound level meter with the aim to get
the reverberation time and the background noise level of the church. Before the measurement
was conducted, a survey questionnaire was first distributed to some of parishioners who attended
the mass in the church. The survey objective is to obtain overview and comprehensive feedback
about the architecture and acoustics of Holy Family Catholic Church. Some interviews were also
carried out with three people who were considered to have a prominent explanation in more
profound view. The space has been described as acoustically „too echo‟ as well as possessing
uneven sound levels throughout the congregational area. Most people complained about the
clarity of speech during the masses.
ISO 3382-1 has been used as the standard for the on-site acoustical measurement and
Odeon Room Acoustic Software has been used to simulate the 3D model of Holy Family
Catholic Church main hall. To get the calculations, some acoustics parameters were used, such
    18
as T30, SPL, D50, and C80. At the end of this research, four alternatives of suggestions were
offered and evaluated for comparison using Odeon auralisation in the form of sound.
