Manufacturing Transformation is a conceptual term that covers a series of manufacturing strategies that help to create the new value of manufacture to develop sustainability (economy/environment/society). Scholars and practitioners have largely affirmed the impacts and opportunities of this research topic. However, few literary works discuss the scientific knowledge development of manufacturing transformation. This study summarizes academic research and aims at gaining a better understanding of the knowledge evolution of the field.
The current study is takes 2,178 scientific papers from 1985 to 2019. By main path analysis, this study observes the knowledge trajectories of manufacturing transformation over the past 35 years. For identifying prominent issues in manufacturing transformation, this study applies cluster analysis and co-word analysis to explore the differences of research issues.
Three development periods are identified based on the results of the main path analysis. In the first period,1985-2000, studies mostly evaluate the balance between investment performance and organizational transformation. The second period, 2001-2015, focuses on expanding the innovative applications of digital technologies in manufacturing. The final stage, 2016-2019, emphasizes the relevance and necessity of manufacturing transformation and sustainable development. Then, cluster analysis shows five significant topics, including advanced manufacturing, lean manufacturing, cloud manufacturing, sustainable manufacturing, and Industry 4.0. Advanced Manufacturing and Lean Manufacturing stand at economic perspective whereas Cloud Manufacturing and Industry 4.0 focus on creating innovative manufacturing technology. Finally, the goal of sustainable manufacturing is to build a sustainable world.
