This dissertation investigates the characteristics of the contemporary architecture and urban space in global society. Rather than considering cities as directly linked to the global economy in a similar, homogeneous way, this research suggests that the mediation of regional and national domains of social action ought to be considered in order to provide a framework for including differences and variation in the treatment of cities in the world system. By exploring the connection between globalisation and urbanisation, I attempt to expand the understanding of the complex relationship between globalisation and the cultural representation in built environments, and the understanding of what are the changes of urban dynamics and architectural representation rework globalisation, and vice versa. With the concerns of the effects of globalisation on our living spaces in everyday life as witnessed in the Xin-Yi Planning District, two main issues addressed in this dissertation are the global city formation and the globalised urban spaces — the high rises.
The development of Xin-Yi Planning District reveals a consumer-oriented global city formation with a different appearance of the cityscape, which might be an alternative phenomenon and may be a worthy, but as yet unexplored, direction in the formation of a second-tier global city. The case study of Taipei 101 also provides a new possibility in the formations of urban public space and architecture. Associating with cultural identity and publicness, it reveals a meaningful role in the face of homogeneous globalisation in terms of a specific, local, and diverse appearance.
